Unconventional Tesla Charging: Can a Gas Stove Outlet Really Power Your EV?
In a recent TikTok video that's taken social media by storm, an electric vehicle owner tried an unconventional charging method for their Tesla. The surprising twist? They used a gas stove outlet for the job, and it appeared to work just fine.
Posted by TikTok user Rickie (@rickologist), the video revealed a caption that read, "You were too frugal to install a Tesla charger in your garage, so now you have to park your car by the stove outlet just to get 20 miles of charge per hour."
Rickie started by showcasing the kitchen's stove outlet before panning the camera towards a car parked nearby. A charging cord extended from the car, snaking through the kitchen window and connecting to the stove outlet. To accommodate the cord, a towel was used to prop open the window. The charger itself had a standard 120-volt plug adapter, which was plugged into the stove outlet.
The stove had been moved away from the wall to provide enough clearance for this unique experiment. At first glance, it was clear that this method was far from the conventional way to charge an electric vehicle.
The video included hashtags like #newcar and #teslamodely, indicating that the vehicle in question was a brand-new Tesla Model Y, priced at $50,490 on the official Tesla website (excluding taxes and fees). The Tesla Model Y boasts a roomy interior, a 1-speed automatic transmission, and a 0 to 60 mph acceleration time of just 4.8 seconds. Additionally, it offers an impressive range of 330 miles.
Commenters had plenty to say about this unconventional charging method. Some questioned why someone who could afford an electric vehicle wouldn't install a proper charging outlet. However, others were excited about the ingenuity, with one user commenting, "lol, it works! I don't see a problem. We'll find a way."
Another user offered practical advice, suggesting, "Look on Task Rabbit for certified electricians. I got my mom's installed for $200 since I already had the charger."
Yet, safety concerns were raised by another commenter who had experience with this method, cautioning, "LMAO. Someone did this at work and it destroyed a bunch of appliances." Another user worried about the potential financial implications, saying, "The electric bill is going to be insane."
Ultimately, it remains uncertain whether this unconventional charging method is genuinely effective or simply a stunt for social media attention. Electric vehicles are designed with specialized charging outlets for a reason, and using a gas stove outlet may not match the efficiency and speed of the recommended setup.
