Exciting Changes Await: 2023 Kia Carnival Lineup Unveiled
Kia Australia's Carnival lineup will temporarily consist exclusively of diesel models as the company halts orders for V6 petrol variants. The decision is aimed at addressing the backlog of orders for the popular 3.5-liter V6 engine.
According to Roland Rivero, the head of product planning at Kia Australia, the supply challenges for the 3.5-liter V6 engine persist due to its high demand in North America. This has led to a substantial portion of the production being allocated to the North American market. To manage the situation, Kia has already stopped accepting orders for the Carnival Special Edition V6, and this will soon extend to other trim variants.
To mitigate the impact of semiconductor shortages on the SLi and Platinum variants of the Carnival, Kia introduced the Special Edition model earlier this year. This move allowed dealers to fulfill some backorders by converting them into Special Edition orders. However, with the forthcoming facelift of the Carnival, this approach will change, and Kia will closely monitor the supply situation to make informed decisions about introducing new variants.
The updated Carnival, anticipated to arrive in the first half of 2024, will mark the reintroduction of the petrol V6 engine. This new version will also incorporate Kia's latest infotainment system, offering wireless smartphone mirroring and over-the-air software updates.
Kia's upcoming sixth-generation Connected Car Navigation Cockpit (ccNc) will debut with the EV9 later this year and will subsequently be featured in the updated Sorento and Carnival models. This enhancement aims to provide users with an advanced and seamlessly connected driving experience.
Moreover, the upcoming facelifted Carnival is expected to incorporate features from the global lineup that were absent in the current generation released in Australia.
In terms of market performance, the Kia Carnival has secured a dominant position in Australia's people mover market, holding a remarkable 77 percent share as of July 2023. With a total of 6709 units sold this year, Kia has outperformed its competitors combined. In contrast, the Hyundai Staria, a corporate counterpart, lags significantly behind with 772 sales.
As for pricing, the 2023 Kia Carnival lineup includes the following diesel variants:
- 2023 Kia Carnival S Diesel: $49,480
- 2023 Kia Carnival Si Diesel: $54,980
- 2023 Kia Carnival SLi Diesel: $59,780
- 2023 Kia Carnival Special Edition Diesel: $63,190
- 2023 Kia Carnival Platinum Diesel: $67,580
All prices listed exclude on-road costs.
Powering the 2023 Kia Carnival is a 2.2-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine generating 148kW of power and 440Nm of torque. Additionally, there's a 3.5-liter V6 petrol engine with 216kW of power and 355Nm of torque. However, orders for the petrol variant are currently paused. Both engine options are coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive.
In terms of fuel efficiency, the 2023 Kia Carnival achieves 9.6L/100km on the combined cycle with the V6 petrol engine and 6.5L/100km with the diesel option. The petrol engine runs on 91RON regular unleaded fuel, and both engine variants come with a 72L fuel tank.
The 2023 Kia Carnival's dimensions include a length of 5155mm, a width of 1995mm, and a height of 1775mm (including roof rails). Its wheelbase measures 3090mm. The vehicle offers 627L of luggage space with all seats up, which can be expanded to 2785L by folding the third row. The Carnival has a braked towing capacity of 2000kg or 750kg unbraked.
Kia's commitment to customer satisfaction is underscored by its seven-year, unlimited-kilometer warranty, accompanied by seven years of capped-price servicing. The turbo-diesel engine's first seven services are priced at $356, $616, $430, $805, $400, $784, and $425, respectively. Meanwhile, petrol models' servicing costs are $329, $604, $402, $785, $371, $754, and $393 over seven years.
Safety remains a priority for Kia, as evidenced by the Kia Carnival's five-star ANCAP rating. The vehicle achieved notable scores of 90 percent for adult occupant protection, 88 percent for child occupant protection, 68 percent for vulnerable road user protection, and 82 percent for safety assistance. The standard safety features are extensive and include a comprehensive suite of airbags, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane departure warnings, blind-spot assist, and more.
Kia's Carnival models offer varying levels of standard equipment across their trim levels. The base Carnival S includes features like 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and air conditioning. Moving up to the Carnival Si introduces 18-inch alloy wheels, a larger 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone climate control, and more.
The Carnival SLi enhances the experience with a 360-degree camera, keyless entry and start, premium seats, power sliding doors, a hands-free power tailgate, and other amenities. The Special Edition and Platinum variants feature additional luxury touches such as 19-inch black alloy wheels, dual sunroofs, heated and ventilated seats, and a range of advanced features.
The 2023 Kia Carnival is available in a variety of colors, including Ceramic Grey, Astra Blue, Flare Red, Panthera Metal, Snow White Pearl, Deep Chroma Blue, and Aurora Black Pearl. Note that Deep Chroma Blue and Aurora Black Pearl are exclusively offered on SLi, Special Edition, and Platinum models, and there is a $695 premium for all paint options except for Ceramic Grey, which comes at no additional cost.
